A Small Place / A Small Story

Here are two short pieces. One is about a small place looking to revitalize an 180-year-old building. The other is a 12-year old movie that lingers and lingers.

Movie Review - Samsara

First written 1/6/2017

Samsara is the most stunning film I ever stumbled across accidentally. Where was I when this came out in 2012? I watch parts of the Oscars each year, why didn’t they tell me to WATCH THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW!

Movie Review - Kenny and Some Kind of Heaven

First written 2/13/2024

Len and I watched two movies this week that are worth talking about.

Both movies circle around these life questions. How does one build and maintain a meaningful life? What do we need? What do we deserve? What will make us happy?

Movie Review - Supernova

first written 2/9/2024

Last night Len and I watched Supernova. I looked up movies with Stanley Tucci (love his work) because Len was going to be out for the evening. I had no idea what the movie would be about and, oh dear friends, it broke my heart.

3 Good Movies & a Fake Trope

Fear Nothing But Bees

Have you noticed that nearly every liberally-inclined political writer/pundit/chronicler is telling you to take care of yourself? They say, “Yup, that was awful and now it’s going to be the clown car to mayhem.

Fat Tuesday & Valentines Day & Ash Wednesday (says it all)

I think today has to be a Three Things. You probably don’t even know I have Three Things scaffolding in my secret writing toolbox of organizational tools, but I do. Sometimes it’s how thoughts present themselves, you know? Things to say, but not for too long.

Phrases and designations that barely existed when we who are old now were young then.

I wrote A Fairy Tale Dinner which is posted in The Gullet. I will post the link to that story at the end of this one. A friend asked for more About Julia and Woody; that is what this is.

1. Earlier this year I read these two books by Palestinian writers and I recommend both. If you’ve read good books by Palestinian writers, maybe tell us about them in the comments?

Bird against a bright, blue sky

The Wisconsin Writers Association hosts a short story contest each year. This morning I submitted a story I wrote over the past few months. If and/or when it doesn't win (I'm not optimistic but I have hope.
