Election Trauma

Well, shit.

Whatever your preferred social media is, today it is filled today with people having opinions and feelings and telling you how to have your opinions and feelings, too.

I care about the main questions of who voted and who didn’t. As that kind of info comes in, I will pay attention because it will be relevant. Also, there were 40 bomb threats in several states - all in predominantly black or democratic-leaning voting sites. I want to know more about that and I want there to be repercussions.

But mostly, Trump’s win is a big ugly Rorschach test. What you are feeling today most likely bounces off your most angry and helpless feelings from when you were a kid. This kind of drama and trauma goes deep.

I’m worried about the nation our kids and grandchildren will have to negotiate. I’m stunned with fear at what Trump’s and Vance’s governance might do to global politics.

But mostly, right now, I just have very strong feelings and so do you. Pay attention to what you are feeling and needing and wanting. Don’t fall backwards into overeating or overdrinking if you can help it. Other than that – pay attention and honor what you wanted and lost. What we wanted and lost.

A good day for the context to read Psalm 137. “By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps. How can we sing our songs of while in a foreign land? (Let the reader beware; this Psalm is bitter and violent.)

You don’t have to rearrange your emotions to match what someone else is advising you to do today. Not even mine.

Feel free to say what you are thinking, feeling, seeing, and hearing in the comments.

Where were our sisters? Where were the mothers and fathers of daughters? They all knew who he and his handmaiden are . How could they put that misogynistic creep back in the White House.
I fear for my granddaughters.
God bless us all.

Tears filled my eyes this morning on learning the results of the Election. But I keep in mind that half the country did not want this. OK - we can grieve. We should grieve, but the light inside of us should not be dimmed by fear and hate. We get to work, now.

First they came for the immigrants....

I know many undocumented immigrants who Donald Trump and Stephen Miller may be targeted, rounded up, and deported to a land they have left long ago and no longer know. They are fluent in English, have created families, built businesses, purchased homes. This is now their homeland which Trump & Company will forcibly uproot and dispossess. How can we stand with our immigrant neighbors? Who will be next?

It was hard to get out of bed today knowing what we will be facing for the next four...and maybe more...years. My husband and I also worked at the elections yesterday for 16 hours so fatigue may have had something to do with it. Physical fatigue combined with the mental fatigue I feel today after being so hopeful for the last few months is exhausting.

“The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn.” ~T.H. White, The Once and Future King

Iron-dark grains underfoot,

Phrases and designations that barely existed when we who are old now were young then.

I wrote A Fairy Tale Dinner which is posted in The Gullet. I will post the link to that story at the end of this one. A friend asked for more About Julia and Woody; that is what this is.

Three Things except it’s really more than that.

1. Earlier this year I read these two books by Palestinian writers and I recommend both. If you’ve read good books by Palestinian writers, maybe tell us about them in the comments?
