Are you writing to your Reps?

The photo is the Badger that presides over our Wisconsin elected officials in Madison. If anyone has a better photo for what I am proposing in this post - send it on!

...

Are you writing to your representatives?

We know this is IMPORTANT - but it’s hard because one writes ten minutes or a morning and then sends it off - and maybe a formula response arrives a week or two later or maybe not, but the response doesn’t match our effort.

A friend sent a letter they wrote to send to representatives. While reading it it occurred to me others would like to know what they said. And that my website could be a good place to share what we are doing so that others can read our messages, too. Can this help make our efforts feel more real, more communal? Can we increase the juice and karma that we all need right now?

Plus, there are so MANY issues to care about. I’m curious what we are doing to address the flood of craziness.

If you write a letter to an official asking for change - after you send it to them - email a copy of your letter to me.

I will post it here and I will NOT publish your name. What we want is to amplify our courage and knowledge.  All of us together know a lot and care a lot.

Also, assume that others of us might copy all or part of your letter – when we write to our reps.

…

Here’s the letter I received last night.

For Lent I’m sending a message to Republican women senators and representatives each day. Here’s my message: “As a person of faith, I’m just asking you to center yourself and check in with your still small voice in the coming weeks and months. You have been entrusted with enormous power and we are depending on you to use it for the good of the American people. Please don’t let any political bullies pressure you into anything that tugs at your conscience. It feels very important right now. Peace be with you.”

..

You can send the copies of your letters to me at MB at MaryBethDanielson dot com   You can also send it to me in the comments and I can copy it from there.  No comment ever posts itself; I always look to see what's there. So I can omit your name then, also.

I have no idea if this idea will appeal to but let’s try it.

I do write to my Congressional reps but as I live in VT and our Senators and Representative are Dems, I do not do it too often. I did write to our Governor asking that he reconsider cancelling our free school breakfasts and lunches for all students. He wrote back with the expected denial…he may have more reason now that the doge bags are cutting the farm subsidies that enable schools to purchase locally grown food at a bargain.
Yeah, I’ll keep writing and doing what I can to keep our locals from starving. I mean, salmon swim upstream all the time, right? How hard can it be.

Iron-dark grains underfoot,

Phrases and designations that barely existed when we who are old now were young then.

I wrote A Fairy Tale Dinner which is posted in The Gullet. I will post the link to that story at the end of this one. A friend asked for more About Julia and Woody; that is what this is.

Three Things except it’s really more than that.

1. Earlier this year I read these two books by Palestinian writers and I recommend both. If you’ve read good books by Palestinian writers, maybe tell us about them in the comments?

Bird against a bright, blue sky

The Wisconsin Writers Association hosts a short story contest each year. This morning I submitted a story I wrote over the past few months. If and/or when it doesn't win (I'm not optimistic but I have hope.
