Mary Beth Writes

This morning I finished a story I’ve been working on since May! I submitted it to an intimidating place that won’t accept it … but they say life happens where you show up, right? I got my money’s worth out of my morning.

Here are some other places where I showed up lately -- where others had showed up before me:

wooden disks for sale at Menards

Wooden disks for sale at Menards. Aren’t they beautiful?

Purple car

I make my morning oatmeal out of whatever looks likely and needs to be eaten. Which is how last week I glanced down and said to myself, “I bet I am the only person in America this morning who is eating sweet potato grape oatmeal.”

I bet the guy who owns this car feels the same.

wild shoes

Wandered through St. Vincent’s. The person who originally bought these shoes showed up in her life!

little guys

These guys were in a bag marked $2, but I used my discount and got them for $1.84.  They are attending church with me Oct 29, when I preach the sermon as well as a “story for all ages” time.  I’ll use them in the kid part, but I bet adult would enjoy finger puppet action in any average sermon. Will have to think about that.

leaves at my feet

I like October. Something about me that is NOT unique.

wet walk

When I started this walk, it wasn’t raining. When I was two miles from home, it started to pour. I was wearing a baseball hat; brim of the hat kept rain off my glasses and face. My thrifted jacket proved to be (lo and behold!) waterproof. Walking back home in the rain was comfortable. I swear I thought for twenty minutes about how life is not yes or no, good or bad, possible or impossible – but just – do you have the tools you need?  While I was walking, this seemed very deep. Not so sure now.

The Morning Glory who showed up and gave its blue to the sky.

I love this -- all of it. The car the oatmeal, and how life is not yes or no.

Sweet potato grape oatmeal. (Clenching my teeth - ha). Love the shoes - well, not for me. Finger puppets, very cute. I have a sign above the bed in Girl Heaven - “ Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain”. Kind of says it all, doesn’t it Excellent. Enjoyed this!

Loved the Morning Glories and the discs! A productive walk.

A-Z Danger

Years ago Len took this photo of a lone coyote.

I just finished rereading Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News. Boy oh boy do I love her writing.

The story asks this. How do people who were damaged by their childhoods find purpose, meaning, and love as adults? Good question, huh?

A-Z Cats

This is Lil Girl hanging out while I wrote this.

Cats

“Every family needs a cat so there is someone to blame everything on who won’t actually care.” Quote attributed to Len.

I was 21 when I got my first cat through the fraught circumstance of someone dropping him off on a highway. He made his way to the backstep of my brother’s house where Sebastian the dog began to bark his head off. Paul went to the door to discover a kitten hanging by its wee claws to the screen door.

A-Z means I’m writing short takes on random topics and I’m going in alphabetical order. I love this quote: “Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.”

That’s the spirit I’m pursuing: Undisciplined, irreverent, and original.

A-Z, Alaska

1/25/2023

I’ve never been to Alaska. I’m sure I’d love it but going there is not a big dream for either Len or me.

However, this. When our son was around 12 he developed a crush on all things Alaskan. Kid who lives in a ranch house on a Midwestern cul-de-sac wants to get lost in tundra and mountains with moose and wolves. Yup.

At first he just talked, dreamed, read books, and watched shows about Alaska. Then, at 14 he got a part-time job as a janitor at a vet clinic and he kept that job until he went to college. It was a good fit for a kid not drawn to homework.

A to Z

I am not exactly depressed, but I can whip up a pretty good glum at almost any moment. There have been about three sunny days since Thanksgiving, and four colds, and I’m feeling it. How about you?

We can’t even properly whine. Not with the Atmospheric Rivers of Doom in California, and tornadoes in the south. And all the other glum and hateful news.

Sara Kurtz & Healthcare by Zip Code? Really?

Many of you have been very generous in the past. Please think about making a donation to the GoFundMe account of Sara Kurtz. Donate here.

Who is Sara? She’s a friend of my niece Susan.
