Mary Beth Writes

I spent five wonderful hours outside in my own backyard this morning. Dug more garden bed area, finished churning in the rest of the winter compost, covered much of the area that will be vegetable beds soon with watered-in cardboard. I dunno, I think it will make the earth warm and later I can rip the cardboard around the base of plants to help hold down the weeds. Seemed like a good idea. Can’t hurt.

I have a green thumb though not the kind green thumb where one grows and reaps exactly what one plans to grow and reap. I’m just pretty good at making a place where plants like to grow. I welcome them the best I can and try to keep them from choking each other. I plant what I want and then I sort of take on the role of Sherpa. I’ll bring stuff (water, fertilizer) to the plants and try to get the crowdy guys out of the way and we will see who makes it through the season in fine fettle - and who just makes it through the season with a good story. I’m open to both.

So anyway, five hours outside (yes, with sunscreen and a hat) washes the mind of strong feelings and precise words.

So today I am going to post some of Len’s osprey photos from this past week.

What a glorious day! I, too, spent it in the garden: transplanting here and there, weeding, just enjoying the weather. Love the Osprey photos. Where are they?

Where are they? Any where near your home?

Tuff weekend, lost a young ( to me ) minister friend at the end of the week... Bad sleep patterns didn't help but a day in the sun puttering around and doing some cleanup on the back patio feels good... And a singing 3yr old Great niece singing " you are my sunshine" to make Uncle's Franc & Michael not feel soo bad about losing Tim. ( !!!PRICELESS!!! )

I'm so sorry for the loss of a friend. Glad for the sweet comfort of a little kid.

It feels so good to be outside and be with nature. The osprey pictures are awesome We put 2 bird feeders out this afternoon. One for the yellow finches. A sure cake in the tree. One for the “Other birds”. We’ve seen a pair of cardinals

The ospreys are not too close, not too far from here. I'll send you an email, Kathryn, to tell you where exactly. Anyone else who is a birder and we know you, I will tell you for sure! Just ask! Len's been careful to not say exactly where they are because apparently there are creeps who like to bother and sometimes shoot them.

Also, I know where you live Sedgwick, so I didn't think I needed to tell you precisely where they are since I think your won't drive 1000 miles to see them!!

Ricky

8/7/2022

My step-grandmother Ricky ate an apple every night. She’d sit on her bed, lean against the headboard, then chomp the apple after which she would remove her false teeth and lay down to sleep.

I haven’t really thought about Ricky in years but this week for no identifiable reason (because we were talking about unsung aspects of our lives?) I dreamed about her. I awoke one morning seeing her face as she stood in her dining room chatting with my mom and me. Ergo, I started thinking about her.

What's Ordinary in Your World?

This train photo is not cribbed from anywhere. It's a Genuine Leonardo.

Hello and how are you? I am writing less and less as Len and I meander around to doctors, specialists, dentists, and that way-too-early appointment at the endodontist. (So far, we are fine.) The irony being that most of what we are attending to are the side effects of medications prescribed for stuff that didn’t hurt and we didn’t even know we had.

A Quiet Week

The cat in the picture is my daughter's cat, Nancy. Sometimes we all just need a quiet place to slow down and think.

What's going right in your world?

My teeth again. Argh. This past week I’ve had a jaw ache/toothache that got worse instead of better. Today my dentist said I need a crown but also that’s not the thing that is causing the swelling and infection and ache. I now have an Rx for an antibiotic and an appointment for that crown and an appointment with an endodontist to get an Xray worthy of NASA.

Memory & Consequences

To remember hard stories truthfully requires bravery.

WHITE CAKE!

The picture is our wedding cake, made by my friend Karen, who drove it from Indiana to Chicago on the hottest day of that year. It was in the back seat so their two little boys had to ride in front (remember when kids could ride in front?). They got lost in the city but I didn't know that for years because Karen and her husband start early and had time to get lost and then figure it out. Sometimes wedded bliss is a lot of work.

The following story and recipe is not about the wedding cake, but it is the photo I have...
