Mary Beth Writes

“At a time when the surgeon general is warning that this week could be the nation’s most dangerous to date — comparing the scale of the potential loss to Pearl Harbor and 9/11 — Wisconsin is on the verge of becoming the only state in April that failed to find a way to delay voting. The Democratic governor made a last-ditch plea to close the polls. The GOP-led Legislature and Wisconsin Supreme Court shut him down.”  https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/07/wisconsin-election-coronavirus-primary-171216

I went for a long walk this morning. My walk was filled self-pep-talk regarding how I should use my powers to DECIMATE Wisconsin State Republican elected officials.

Yeah, like I could do that.

All I need to do (I told myself) is lay out and organize what I already know about Privileged White Man State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and then do the same for Privileged White Man State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald.  And then lay out some more true facts about Waukesha’s Privileged White Men Republican Senator Scott Allen and Republican Representative Chris Kapenga.

But you know what?  I’m not an investigative journalist and most likely you aren’t either.  It is not our job to lay out the history of the self-aggrandizing, self-enriching, self-empowering Republicans legislature in Wisconsin.

All we have to do is call or email them and tell them what we think.

This is how you communicate; https://legis.wisconsin.gov/

By the time I’m back here tomorrow, I will have called or emailed to my reps. If you are in Wisconsin, you do the same, okay?  It is not our job to be awesome at this. It IS our job to hold them accountable for this travesty against voting rights for all Americans.

I did give in to pissedness at one point. My FB feed gave me a Republican ad telling me who they want me to vote for. I reported the ad as a scam.

I need to say. I was raised by Republicans. I have good friends who are Republican.

There is something going on within the Republican party that is so divisive that the rest of us are amazed, angry, and scared. THIS is not who my friends are. These disenfranchising, arrogant, privileged political steamroller people and their policies are NOT what I used to regard as the Republican party.  This is mean and crazy.

Just as I was crossing my front yard this morning after my 4-mile Fast n’ Furious hike, my young neighbor across the street yelled over to me. “How are you guys doing?”

I’ve only talked with her a couple times since she and her husband moved in two years ago.

I yelled back that we are well.

“If you ever need anything, we’d be glad to help!”

“Thanks!”

I walked into my house realizing, ‘OMG, young people are looking out for me.’

When Len came back from his 20-mile bike ride, we agreed that this is unnerving but very kind.

Today feels like a change-the-lightbulbs day. Tired of being astonished and astounded. Tired of being angry. Tired of being scared and worried. Tired of being logical – because the foes we face don’t seem to care diddlysquat about well-reasoned arguments.

We are in deep now; this is not a joke.

Take care of yourself. Stay inside or walk outside alone if you can do that. Wear a mask and gloves if you have to go in a store or to pick up take-out of fill up your car with gas.

CALL OR EMAIL/TEXT EVERYONE IN YOUR WORLD WHO SHOULD BE DOING BETTER!

It didn’t have to be this way.

I just got through saying the same things to my Facebook Friends( although not so nicely as you.) Robin Vos is an ASP in the Garden of Racine County. He is only interested in power and cares not a bite of an Apple for his constituents. I like your gumption and your vocabulary when you are mad MaryBeth. Love ya and stay safe.

My sentiments exactly!!!!! Thanks for putting into words..

Yes, we should all repeat Gov. Cuomo’s thoughts, “it didn’t have to be this way”. Then we need to believe “It doesn’t HAVE to be this way.” Contacting the Republican legislators may feel good, but as someone who worked for a decent, Democratic legislator, before the change in power, I can tell you that this may do little. It is important to vote. Vote them out of office. Support good candidates. Vote for whoever ends up as the Democratic nominee - however and whenever that is determined. They are making it hard to vote, but we have to do it. Vote like our lives depend on it...because our lives, or other lives do.

KEEPING QUIET by Pablo Neruda Now we will count to twelve and we will all keep still. For once on the face of the earth, let’s not speak in any language; let’s stop for one second, and not move our arms so much. It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines; we would all be together in a sudden strangeness. Fisherman in the cold sea would not harm whales and the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands. Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire, victories with no survivors, would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the shade, doing nothing. What I want should not be confused with total inactivity. Life is what it is about; I want no truck with death. If we were not so single-minded about keeping our lives moving, and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves and of threatening ourselves with death. Perhaps the earth can teach us as when everything seems dead and later proves to be alive. Now I’ll count up to twelve and you keep quiet and I will go.

Advent Light Post 12/1/2020

(The photo is of headlights making a dotted line on the cemetery fence.)

...

Oh that morning! Len drove us like crazy across Chicago to the hospital where we would birth our first child.  It was a very clear, very cold December morning, kind of like what’s outside my window right now.

That same evening I was wheelchaired back out of that hospital. When the lobby doors slid open, the world had become night and the driveway vapor lights lit a blizzard of whirling snow.

It was a completely different world. Yes it was.

Advent Light Post 11/30/2020

Today is Len’s birthday and to celebrate being born on the last day of November in the upper Midwest, he is out on his bike right now. It’s spitting snow, there are 20-30mph winds, and the real-feel temp is 20. He has on both pairs of his bicycling pants. He also has a slice of pumpkin raisin Bundt cake (hmmm, I wonder who baked that) in his bike’s little trunk.

Happy Birthday to the kind of guy who, when a girl invites him to attend the Sunday school class she teaches - comes to that Sunday school class. A rare man, indeed.

Advent Light 11/28/2020

Tomorrow, Sunday, is the first Sunday of Advent.

So first of all, like I said before, I’m preaching. I think you can listen to the whole service starting at 9:30AM, if you go to https://www.uniteduuc.org/ .  There is usually a link there that you have to click, when you click it, it says something about YouTube, so click that link, too. Otherwise, by Monday (maybe earlier, I don’t know who does this or when) it will show up on YouTube at United Unitarian Universalist, Waukesha, and my name.

Preaching, Cheating, Thanking & Eating

I am preaching this coming Sunday at my church. I think if you check our website Sunday morning (11/29) between 9:20 and 9:30 - the URL for the service will be there. The November theme for UU’s  is Healing, so that’s what I am preaching about. https://www.uniteduuc.org/

The Gales of November

Today is November 10th which is the 45th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. (Listen to the song here!)

11/6/2020 Wow! It's happening!

I wrote this yesterday: “I’m all over the place. How about you?”

Today I’m: “I think I lost weight last night and it was some of the heaviness of persistent stress.”

It’s happening, Friends. Yes, we all know nothing will be sensationally simple going forward. Right now, the Senate is where it was pre-election. (Though hold on, Stacey Abram’s Amazing Georgia is having TWO senate races in January.)
